Nematodes are microscopic nematodes that naturally combat pests. But at what temperature do they work best? And can I use nematodes during frost? In this blog post, you'll discover the optimal conditions for using nematodes, so you achieve maximum results.
What is the ideal soil temperature for nematodes?
Not all nematodes thrive at the same temperatures. It's important to note that the temperatures mentioned refer to soil temperature , not air temperature. Soil temperature can differ from the outside temperature, especially in extreme cold or heat. You can check current soil temperatures via the KNMI: Current soil temperatures .
Below is an overview of the most commonly used nematode species and their ideal soil temperature:
Nematodes against 👇 | Soil temperature |
8 - 28°C | |
8 - 28°C | |
12 - 28°C | |
5 - 30°C | |
5 - 30°C |
It's important to know that nematodes are less effective at temperatures outside their optimal range. Furthermore, some nematodes are effective at the same soil temperature, but the environment in which they are used is usually different, such as the vine weevil (lawn) and snails (garden).
Can I use nematodes when it's freezing?
During frost, the use of nematodes is not recommended. Nematodes cannot survive in frozen soil and become ineffective when the soil temperature drops below freezing. Even if the air temperature is slightly above freezing, the soil can still be frozen. Therefore, always check the current soil temperature via the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) before applying nematodes: Current soil temperatures .
However, if it freezes in the evening, that doesn't necessarily mean the soil temperature will immediately drop below freezing everywhere. The immediate surface can freeze quickly, but that's precisely why it's wise to apply the nematodes during the day. This gives them a chance to penetrate the soil before the cold really sets in. So, keep a close eye on the soil temperature and apply the nematodes while the ground isn't completely frozen.
When can you not use nematodes?
Although nematodes are adaptable, there are circumstances where they work less well:
- Below freezing : Nematodes cannot survive in frozen soil.
- Above 30°C : High temperatures can reduce the effectiveness of nematodes.
- For dry soil : Nematodes need moisture to move and reach their prey. Therefore, ensure the soil remains moist after application.

Useful tips for applying nematodes
Always check the packaging for specific temperature requirements. Also, check the soil temperature via the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) before applying nematodes. Apply nematodes in cloudy weather or in the evening to prevent sun-induced dehydration. Ensure the soil remains sufficiently moist for the nematodes to work optimally.
